Study Spaces 2020-21

Starting Mon June 7, the Gerstein Science Information Centre will expand essential technology access for computers and wifi, increasing up to 110+ study spaces.

Guidelines and procedures

  • Open to current U of T students, staff, and faculty.
  • Physically-distanced study spaces and computer workstations will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Booking is no longer required.
  • There is no time limit
  • There will be signage to show which seats and tables are available
  • Work stations and tables without chairs should not be used
  • Non-medical masks or face coverings must be worn indoors in all common-use spaces such as study spaces. Please review the University's policy on non-medical masks or face coverings and information on proper usage of masks.

  • The 1st floor offers 96 seats and 21 computer workstations (see floor plan below for details)

Access & details about specific spaces and services

  • Users must scan their TCards to enter the building
    • New student?: If you don't have your TCard yet, or your TCard isn't yet operational, bring proof of registration instead – e.g. timetable or tuition invoice
  • Reduced hours are in operation
  • Books stacks remain closed in compliance with our HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service, which will be maintained in order to provide access to users who cannot visit the library
  • Journal stacks are closed
  • Course reserves are not available, as the Short Term Loan Desk remains closed
  • LIRA workstations and study space for visitors are not available




1st floor:

  • General study areas (including Wallace Room, Morrison Pavilion, Heritage Reading Room, Silent Study Room, Quiet Study Room, Course Reserves seating area)
  • Washrooms (by entrance across from Green Beet Cafe); accessible & gender neutral washroom on main floor (by journal stacks)
  • Book returns slot - *for Gerstein books only*
  • Temporary reflection space (George Connell space, in area between stairs to 2nd floor and Morrison Pavilion)

1st floor:

  • General study areas (Quiet Study Room - lower room)
  • Group study rooms
  • Grad lockers
  • Journal stacks
  • Book Stop collection & reading area
  • LIRA/public computer workstations

Entire 2nd floor, 1-Below, 2-Below, 3-Below, including:


  • Borrowing:
  • Computer and wifi access (1st floor only)
  • Printing/Copying/Scanning (1st floor only)
  • Public Service Desk:
  • Short Term Loan Desk
    • Course reserves
    • Technology loans (incl. phone/laptop chargers, 360 camera, Google Cardboard)
  • 3D printing & VR Studio
  • TBucks machine
